In South Africa, there are only 458 health care workers for every 100,000 citizens. Efforts to build a sustainable health care workforce are hindered by low health worker recruitment, low faculty retention, under-resourced teaching and learning institutions, limited opportunities for advanced study, and curricula that is not aligned with educational needs.
To improve the quantity and quality of the nursing and midwifery workforce, in 2015, ICAP began partnering with South Africa’s Ministry of Health to strengthen nursing and midwifery education at three institutions:
- Prince Mshiyeni School of Nursing
- Free State School of Nursing
- Mpumalanga School of Nursing
Through NEPI, ICAP and partners are addressing South Africa’s challenges to nursing and midwifery education by: providing training workshops for faculty, tutors, and administrators; providing online courses on treating tuberculosis and HIV; developing new curricula; and supporting the development of libraries and clinical laboratories.
NEPI also supports partnerships between local, national, and international nursing and midwifery institutions involved in pre-service education, promoting south-to-south partnerships with East, Central and Southern African College of Nursing (ECSACON) and the Forum of University Nursing Departments in South Africa (FUNDISA).
In 2016, the first cohort of over 300 first-year students enrolled in nursing and midwifery schools.
